The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
