Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Speech
On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an audacious start to his administration.
An Unprecedented Leader
The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing Political Headwinds
The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past comments.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
